What are the TEST types in IELTS?

TEST IELTS has two types i.e. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Reading and Writing Modules of IELTS Academic and General Training are different. Whereas Speaking and Listening Modules for both test types are the same.

IELTS SPEAKING:

It is an 11–14-minute interview with 3 parts. First, you are asked introductory questions, following which are the part 2 – Cue cards where you have to speak for 2 minutes on a topic. The third part of the interview is the follow-up questions.

IELTS READING:

It is a one-hour test that tests the candidates on their reading abilities and a variety of reading skills. With 3 sections and different passages having – an easy to difficult level of text, candidates are asked questions of various types including Matching the Headings, Sentence Completion, True- False and Not Given, Yes- No and Not Given, etc.

IELTS WRITING:

It is a one-hour test- having two task types depending on IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic. Task 2 is the same for both test types- which is an essay. It is important to write the minimum number of words required and keep in mind that you address the question asked appropriately.

IELTS LISTENING:

In this module, test takers have to listen to 30-minute audio and solve questions based on it simultaneously. There are 4 sections of this audio and candidates are tested through a variety of questions. You get 10 minutes to transfer your answers at the end if you choose to take an IELTS paper-based exam.

    IELTS FAQ’S

    The full form of IELTS is The International English Language Testing System. IELTS is an English language proficiency test for study, migration or work.

    IELTS test is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the basic language of communication. IELTS is required for entry to universities/colleges abroad.

    There are four modules i.e. writing, listening, speaking and reading. The writing module is the toughest and difficult among the above four modules.

    The British Council and IDP India conduct IELTS exam. IELTS exam is conducted 48 times in a year to assess student’s proficiency in the English language.

    A candidate may take the IELTS test as many times as he likes till he acquires the desired IELTS score. There are no restrictions on taking the IELTS exam. The retake of the exam costs the same as the first attempt of the test.

    IELTS Academic is for the ones who want to study abroad. IELTS General Training is for those who want to apply for permanent immigration or for work opportunities.

    The IELTS is designed to help you work, study or migrate to a country where English is the native language. This includes countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, USA and other parts of the World.

    The IELTS exam requires a minimum age of 16 years. The IELTS exam is applicable to anybody over the age of 16.

    The overall band score is the average of the four component scores (i.e. of writing, listening, speaking, reading), rounded to the nearest whole or half band. If the average of the four components ends in .25, the overall band score is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, the overall band score is rounded up to the next whole band. If the average ends with a fraction below .25 or .75, the overall score is rounded down.

    There is no pass or fail score in IELTS. The results are reported in band scores from 1.0, the lowest, to 9.0, the highest, in half band increments.

    The rating is as below.

    0 – Did not attempt the test

    1 – Non user

    2 – Intermittent user

    3 – Extremely limited user

    4 – Limited user

    5 – Modest user

    6 – Competent user

    7 – Good user

    8 – Very good user

    9 – Expert user

     

    The Listening, Reading and Writing sections of all IELTS tests are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them. The Speaking section, however, can be completed up to a week before or after the other tests. The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
