IELTS Academic

IELTS ACADEMIC PATTERN:

The first question is what is IELTS? IELTS is an English Language Proficiency Test which stands for International English Language Testing System. IELTS can be taken in two forms i.e. IELTS Academic and ELTS General Training.

IELTS ACADEMIC is taken by those test takers who want to go abroad for the purpose of study. IELTS Academic has 4 modules or 4 language abilities that you are tested on namely Speaking, Listening, Reading & Writing. However, these 4 modules are not conducted together if you are a candidate taking the test in a paper-based format.

3 the IELTS Academic Modules are conducted together i.e. Writing, Reading & Listening, and the speaking module is conducted either 7 days before or 7 days after. If you are a candidate who is giving a computer-based exam, your speaking will be conducted either before or after the rest of the modules.

ABOUT WRITING MODULE:

IELTS Academic Writing Module time duration is 60 minutes.

The topics for the IELTS Writing module are of general interest and are suitable for test takers entering undergraduate and postgraduate studies or seeking professional registration.

There are 2 tasks, i.e., Task 1: Report Writing & Task 2: Essay.

Task 1 – You will be presented with a graph, table, chart, or diagram and asked to describe, summarize,, or explain the information in your own words. You may be asked to describe and explain data, describe the stages of a process, how something works, or describe an object or event and you have to write a minimum of 150 words in Task 1 – it is advised to complete this task in 20 minutes.

Task 1 – is not that difficult but there are some structures and vocabulary that you have to follow.

Task 2 – You will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.
Now, Task 2 – this essay is asked out of general 24-25 topics – like crime, globalization, environment, job, museums, etc. and it should be a minimum of 250 words and it is advised that you complete this task within 40 minutes.

Now a few things you should keep in mind for the writing module.

  1. The writing style should be formal for both tasks.
  2. Answers must be given on the answer sheet and must be written in full.
  3. Notes or bullet points are not acceptable as answers.
  4. You will be penalized if your answer is too short – because they want to know if you can express the given task properly which is why there is no upper word limit but they ask you to write a minimum of 150 words for Task 1 and a minimum of 250 words for Task 2.

The TEST INSTITUTE is ready to help you to ace – IELTS Writing Academic. You need to focus on a few things-

  1. Basic grammar should be sorted. Basic grammar is not enough – the exam focuses on how complex you can write and the grammatical range you have – so more complex and compound-complex sentences are to be written in both tasks.
  2. Your writing style and how well you use complex writing structures and sentences- the writing style should be formal.
  3. Content should be top notch – if you are not well aware of the topic – e.g. Environment, Crime – you will not be able to formulate ideas and opinions addressing the task.
  4. Task Interpretation is another important criterion to score well under task achievement.

All of these things we cover at the TEST INSTITUTE and we make sure that Writing a very scary module becomes very easy. We have been doing this with a lot of experience and we have seen students drastically improving their IELTS writing with our tips and methods. We provide special classes on content and supporting grammar classes for Writing and Speaking. TEST also ensures the writing tasks are corrected the same day according to the precise marking criteria of IELTS so that the student can improve with our feedback and guidance.

ABOUT READING MODULE:

IELTS Academic Reading Module Time Duration is 60 minutes.

The Reading section consists of 40 questions, designed to test a wide range of reading skills. These include reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical arguments, and recognizing writers’ opinions, attitudes, and purpose. Basically, IELTS Reading tests do not just judge your reading abilities but the comprehension of the passages as well.

IELTS Academic test – this includes three long texts which range from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical. These passages are picked from websites, books, journals, magazines, and newspapers, so they are for a non-specialist audience but are appropriate for people entering university courses or seeking professional registration.

But these 3 passages are nothing like your school’s comprehension because of the kind of questions they are tested on.

The Total number of questions is 40 and there is a wide variety of questions asked for e.g. multiple choice, identifying information, identifying the writer’s views/claims, matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, diagram label completion, and short-answer questions.

Test takers are required to transfer their answers to an answer sheet during the time allowed for the test, i.e. answers need to be transferred to the answer sheet in the 1 hour itself. No extra time is allowed for transfers.

Every question is worth 1 mark, and you need to be extra careful with spelling and grammar because of poor spelling you will lose that mark.

Now to ace your IELTS Reading- there are a few things to consider:

  1. Your reading habit and your reading speed.
  2. Your eye catches paraphrasing.
  3. Your ability to analyse the text according to the question type asked.

We get a lot of students who score 5.5/5 in the reading module and then switch to PTE because they are unable to score well or are scared of the IELTS reading module. Do not worry as we at TEST have got you covered. We cover the reading module according to the current reading skills of the candidate and hold discussions for tips techniques and reading habits that help students score better. For students weak in this module and English in general – we also hold reading sessions where we solve and read the modules with the students to inculcate the habit of reading properly and solving this kind of text.

ABOUT LISTENING MODULE:

IELTS Academic Listening Module Duration is 30 minutes audio.

Now the third module is listening which is either very easy or a nightmare for some students.

You will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then write your answers to a series of questions. All 4 recordings have 10 questions.

  • Recording 1 – a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context.
  • Recording 2 – a monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities.
  • Recording 3 – a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment.
  • Recording 4 – a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.

The recordings are heard only once. They include a range of accents, including British, Australian, New Zealand, American and Canadian.

If you opt for the paper-based IELTS Format – then you are given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet however if you are giving the test on computer-based format, then the answers are entered when you are listening to the audio and you get 2 minutes to check the answers at the end of the audio. A variety of question types are used, chosen from the following: multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labeling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion, and sentence completion.

Again make sure that spelling are correct while transferring to the answer sheet because otherwise you will lose out on that mark.

Now a brief of how we cover this at TEST Institute. We make sure we analyze your current listening skills and then work with you accordingly – so for starters – If your listening skills in the English Language are weak then we prepare you through audio scripts so you understand how to listen for details better.

We also prepare students for different scenarios e.g. Directions, educational conversations so that they are able to answer and solve the test better for individuals who have good listening abilities – we make sure, we practice with you at different speeds and different kinds of questions so you get a sure shot at this exam.

 ABOUT THE SPEAKING MODULE:

IELTS Academic Speaking Module Duration is 11- 14 minutes.

The speaking section assesses your use of spoken English. Every test is recorded.

  • Part 1 – The examiner will ask you general questions about yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies, and interests. This part lasts between four and five minutes. These questions are variable in nature – so the examiner can ask you any number of questions depending on how you answer.
  • Part 2 – You will be given a card that asks you to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same topic.
  • Part 3 – You will be asked further questions about the topic in Part 2. These will give you the opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the test lasts between four and five minutes and is called the follow-up questions. The examiner can ask you any number of questions here.

A lot of students get scared of the speaking module and interview due to hesitancy, lack of ideas and lack of speaking practice and exposure. We get you in that mode of preparation, practice and feedback loop.

A few pointers to keep in mind that work for both – students who are weak in English and who are fluent speakers.

  1. Your grammar should be correct – both the accuracy and range.
  2. Your speaking style should be formal.
  3. Ideas should be relevant and you should be able to answer what the examiner has asked and know what you know about the topic.

We have also worked with students who stammer or are afraid of public speaking and have difficulty forming sentences.
