English Tests Required For Student Direct Stream SDS Canada

English Language Tests Required for Student Direct Stream SDS Canada

The topic is about the English language tests required for the Student Direct Stream (SDS) scheme in Canada. Here’s a summary of the key points.

Student Direct Stream (SDS): The SDS is a program in Canada designed to expedite the study permit application process for international students. The Canadian government aims to process most SDS applications within 20 calendar days.

Eligibility for SDS: To be eligible for the SDS category, you must be a legal resident of one of the 14 listed countries, and India is one of these countries.

English Language Proficiency Requirements: To qualify for the SDS category, you must provide a valid language test result that meets the minimum required score. As of August 10, 2023, there have been changes to the English language test requirements for SDS applicants. These changes include the acceptance of additional English language tests beyond IELTS:

  • CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Test): A minimum overall score of 60 is required.

  • CELPIP General (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program): You need a score equivalent to a Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) score of 7 or higher in each skill.

  • IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System): A minimum overall score of 6 is required, and there is no longer a requirement to achieve a minimum score of six bands in each section (i.e. speaking, listening, reading, and writing).

  • IELTS General Training: You need a minimum score of 6.0 in each skill (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). It must be equivalent to a Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) score of 7 or higher for each ability. A band score of 6.0 in each section is equivalent to a CLB score of 7.

  • PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English): A minimum overall score of 60 is required.

  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language): A minimum of overall score of 83 is required.

Testing Proficiency in All Four English Language Abilities: All of the above-mentioned English language test results must demonstrate proficiency in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Introduction of New English Tests: As of August 10, 2023, four new English tests (CAEL, CELPIP, PTE, and TOEFL) have been introduced for SDS applicants. Prior to this change, only IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training were accepted. This expansion of accepted language proficiency tests aims to make studying in Canada more accessible for international students as the country’s international student population continues to grow.

The above information is crucial for students who are planning to apply for a study permit in Canada through the SDS program and need to meet the English language proficiency requirements. It’s essential for applicants to check the most up-to-date requirements and guidelines on the official Canadian Government website or consult with their educational institution for the latest information on the SDS program.
