Canada Study Permit Faster Through Student Direct Stream (SDS).
International students including Indian students wishing to apply to universities and colleges in Canada can get their visa faster via SDS stream. To apply via SDS you’ll have to fulfill certain conditions, such as letter of acceptance from a post-secondary designated learning institution (DLI), payment of tuition fee for your first year of study, proof of Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 10,000, upfront medical exam confirmation document, academic documents, IELTS TRF band score with minimum score of 6 in each skill i.e. reading, writing, speaking and listening.
If the applicant is not eligible to apply under SDS category then the applicant can apply under non-SDS which is known as General Category or Regular Category. Non-SDS category is the best option for those international students who do not meet the basic requirements of SDS category. If the applicant is not eligible for SDS then the application will be processed under the regular category.
The applicant applying through SDS must be a legal resident (i.e. citizen) living in one of the following countries:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Brazil
- China
- Columbia
- Costa Rica
- India
- Morocco
- Pakistan
- Peru
- Philippines
- Senegal
- Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Vietnam
Who can apply under SDS category?
- The applicant must have an acceptance letter from a post-secondary designated learning institution.
- Must live outside of Canada when you apply under SDS category.
- Must have proof of tuition payment for the first year of study.
- Must have Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAN $ 10,000.00
- If planning to study in Quebec province then must have an attestation of issuance of Quebec Acceptance (CAQ) from the ministe’re de l’lmmigration, de la Francisation et de l’lnte’gration.
- Upfront medical exam confirmation. Get a medical exam report before applying. To get a medical exam, you must see a doctor that has been approved by IRCC and is on the panel.
- Must get a police certificate before applying. Your visa office instructions will tell you if you need to get a police certificate. You’ll find these instructions when you select your country of residence.
- Must have recent secondary or post-secondary school transcripts.
- Must have an English proficiency language test result either:
An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic or general training band score of 6.0 or higher in each of test papers i.e. reading, writing, speaking and listening; or
A Test d’evaluation de francais (TEF) score that is equal to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of at least 7 in each skill i.e. reading, writing, speaking and listening.
No other English language proficiency tests are accepted under the SDS category.
- Must provide other documents as required by the visa authority.
If the applicant lives in another country even if he/she is a citizen of one of the above countries then you will be eligible for a study permit through regular study permit application process and not through SDS category.
The applicant must have a proof of full payment of tuition fee for the first year of study.
- a receipt from the DLI is required; or
- an official letter from the DLI confirming payment of tuition fees; or
- a receipt from a bank showing that the tuition fees has been paid to the DLI; or
- a proof that the tuition fee amount has been transferred in to repository account at the DLI to be applied to the tuition bill at a later date.
The international students applying for study permit through the Student Direct Stream are required to have a minimum GIC of CAD 10,000.00. The applicant is required to acquire a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) which is a Canadian investment that has a guaranteed rate of return for a fixed period of time. A GIC serve as proof of funds to support your living expenses for the initial year of your stay in Canada. The following banks / financial institutions offer GICs that meets the criteria.

The bank that gives you the GIC must cofirm that you bought a GIC by way of:
- a letter of attestation
- a GIC Certificate
- an Investment Directions Confirmation or
- an Investment Balance Confirmation
If your bank or GIC doesn’t meet the criteria, you won’t be able to apply through the Student Direct Stream. Make sure that the bank / financial institution that you choose offers a GIC meets the criteria for the Student Direct Stream.
The following can be the reasons for visa rejection under SDS category.
- not meeting the required band score in English Language Proficiency Test i.e. in IELTS.
- insufficient funds.
- course / program not relevant with previous study.
- acceptance letter from Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
- insufficient documentation.
- low chances of employment in home country.
- not properly explained about returning back to home country after study.
